The Banco Alimentare of Lombardia is a Food Bank located in in the Northern part of Italy. 560 volunteers support the non-profit organization its daily business. Necessary tasks such as collecting, packing and delivering food as well as the management of the organisation are mainly carried out by volunteers.
In 2012, the association Banco Alimentare of Lombardia has helped 1,300 charity institutions. Trough the intense relationship to charitable institutions, the Banco Alimentare provided more than 200,000 people who live in poverty with food. 13,300 tons of food, collected from retailers and growers, were given out to those in need, covering fresh fruit and vegetables as well as pre-cooked meals.
To optimize logistic processes and guarantee the efficient delivery of fresh products to the needy, IFCO supports the Banco Alimentare by donating 25,000 reusable plastic containers to the non-profit organization.
Under WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY, IFCO furthers the changeover to reusable transport solutions and thus helps the Banco Alimentare to reduce their waste disposal costs. In comparison to conventional corrugated packaging, IFCO’s reusable ‘green crates’ have considerable environmental advantages, such as reducing CO2 emissions by up to 53% and ozone depletion by up to 38%.
“The initiative WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY helps to help. Within the scope of the initiative and the worldwide expansion of the Food Bank support, it is our aim, to decisively support organizations like the Banco Alimentare with our green crates” says Eleonora Gemini, General Manager of IFCO Italy.
Marco Magnelli, General Manager, Banco Alimentare adds: “IFCO’s RPCs enable a sustainable execution of our logistics as well as a decisive cost reduction while focussing on our mission: Providing fresh food to those in need. Using the green crates IFCO donated to the Food Bank allows us to waive the cardboard packaging. On behalf of the Banco Alimentare team including all its volunteers, we say thank you, IFCO!”
